Winter weather this week

Right now, for this region, they're expecting precip to move into the area overnight Monday and into Tuesday. Things possibly to start out as some snow/sleet/freezing rain (although the NWS has basically removed snow from the forecast now) overnight Monday and into the morning briefly, with rain mixing in during the afternoon/night and changing over to just rain some time during that time frame and into Wednesday/Thursday (that may be heavy too). Maybe some snow mixing back in overnight in the higher elevations and then some on the backside of the system (which will be something to really watch for). Overall, apparently not what they are expecting over there...at least for now. But still probably enough to cause a few problems early on and in some places each night/morning. Most concern on the "wintry" side as of now would be the freezing rain threat.

Keep an eye on things over the next couple of days, even if they're not saying much...you never know, its already pretty close to us, possible shifts are likely, and still a lot of uncertainties. Either way, it appears anywhere from heavy rain, ice, to snow is possible all throughout a good area at some point this week. Just thought I'd bring this up, in case some haven't heard and especially after the recent underplayed ice event.

Current forecasts...

WCBY-wintry mix of some light sleet, freezing rain ovrnight Monday and early Tuesday (and maybe some flurries for the higher elvations)....then rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

WJHL-wintry mix for eastern KY and Wise, Buchannan and Dickenson counties of SWVA, rain for the rest.

NWS-rain (with freezing rain possible in the higher elevations above 2500ft).

All are pretty much saying the rain could change back and end as some snow Wed. night/early Thursday. Some saying maybe just for the higher elevations, others maybe all and possibly heavy for some of the area.

Winter storm warnings are up for all of eastern KY along with a flood watch (for Tues./Wed. rain). NWS in Jackson showing up to an inch of snow and sleet, with a quarter to half inch of ice (from freezing rain) possible for the most southern counties and up to Harlan County. Heavy rain possible throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, and then ending as snow. Some thoughts that it might be heavy too then. A band of 1-3 inches of snow and sleet, and a half in of ice, just above those counties, then a larger area of 3-7 inches of snow and sleet, with a half to 3/4 an inch of ice possible, right above the stretch of counties in the northern and northeast KY..possible through Wed. morning. Watch out if you're traveling over into KY. Expected to be a big impact for many. Still pretty close to us also.

I hate winter, I want 60-70 degree weather with a light breeze and sunny. I wish April could hurry up and get here, I am tired of snow, sleet, rain, etc.

Wow. That band kicked east quick and ended up outrunning the colder air by the time it got the VA/KY boder. Wasn't a whole lot left to change over. Heard a clap of thunder a short time before it ended, was hoping for some thunder snow.

KY sure got hit hard by this. Good to see the ice stayed away and wasn't underplayed for here, but it was bad for some of them and others.

Berea has a short term. I took this one off. But I have been told by many friends from Berea College that the dorms have been evacuated until the 7th. Right now I am trying to find out what I can about this.

There could be snow headed this way next week. I have seen snow in the forecast.

Yeah, it looks that way. IF the current model projections were to end up holding true, then this would be one of the classic "old school" tracking storms (and some show it delivering a nice snow). Front coming in from the Midwest, low pressure developing and moving up from the Gulf coast, staying far enough to our south but still close enough, heading toward the East coast, and turns up the right side of the Appalachians. Those are usually good. Still a few days to go, and its showing up in a good time frame. Still plenty of time for things to change. Quite a few others liking this..but still would like to see this showing up in the same form the next couple of days. Could be back off the models by then anyway or end up tracking over us or too far east...that's the usual trends, haha.

... Wintry weather is possible early next week across east
Tennessee... southwest Virginia... and southwest North Carolina...

A strong low pressure system is expected to develop across the northern
Gulf of Mexico Monday spreading precipitation northeast into the
Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians early next week. The low
pressure will move northeast up the eastern Seaboard Monday night
and Tuesday allowing colder air to spill into the region. A mixture
of rain and snow is anticipated Monday before changing to all snow
area-wide late Monday afternoon and evening.

Occasional snow is expected Monday night and Tuesday with significant
accumulations possible... especially across the higher elevations.
The snow may linger over the higher terrain through Tuesday night.
Besides the snow... brisk northwest winds and cold temperatures are
expected Monday night through Tuesday night.

The snow may produce difficult travel conditions across the area
early next week. Residents across the southern Appalachians and
Tennessee Valley will need to keep abreast of the latest forecast
from the National Weather Service.
